How to keep going if you give in to temptation

Oscar Wilde once famously said: “I can resist everything except temptation.” For smokers trying to quit who can relate to this, don’t let it be an excuse for not even trying.

Child-on-bike Because even if you try and fail, you can always try again. And you can always reach out for support. After all, remember when you learned to ride a bike? You probably had the help of your mother or father, as well as training wheels. Each time you fell, you learned a little bit more about keeping your balance. Or about steering. The spills you took were part of your learning process — and soon enough, because you kept getting back on the bike time after time, you finally learned to ride it with no help at all.

Stack-of-booksYou can think of quitting in the same way. It’s not always easy, and it takes effort — but if you’re willing to stick with it, you can do it. Especially if you reach out for support. So be sure to talk to other smokers who’ve already quit and ask what methods of resisting temptation worked for them — or how their slip-ups only made them more intent on succeeding next time.
